Kremlin states US sanctions harm attempts to revive ties

(MENAFN) The latest round of US sanctions on Russia represents an “unfriendly step” that has weakened the chances of restoring relations between the two nations, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. Despite this, Moscow remains committed to pursuing better bilateral ties.

The measures, announced midweek and the first of their kind since President Donald Trump took office, target major oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. Washington justified the sanctions by accusing Moscow of a “lack of” commitment to the Ukraine peace process.

In a conversation with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin, Peskov described the move as an “unfriendly step” that has affected the prospects for reviving relations. “But this does not mean we should abandon these aspirations. We must do what is beneficial to us,” he added. “Our interests include building good relations with all countries, including the US.”

Kirill Dmitriev, an aide to President Vladimir Putin who is currently in the US for discussions with Trump administration officials, emphasized that “only constructive, respectful dialogue between Russia and the US can bear fruit.” He also asserted that “any attempts to pressure Russia are simply pointless,” noting that the Russian economy is “in good shape,” as shown by 4% growth last year. Dmitriev, who heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund, cautioned the US against adopting strategies toward Moscow similar to those of former President Joe Biden, which he described as ineffective.

Earlier, President Putin called the sanctions an “unfriendly move” but insisted they would not significantly affect Russia’s economy. “No self-respecting country and no self-respecting people ever decide anything under pressure,” he stated.

Despite extensive Western sanctions, Russia has maintained steady economic growth in recent years. Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin highlighted in April that the country is gradually reducing its dependence on oil and gas exports.
